It seems like one of the simpler calorie-cutting weight loss choices you can make.  Not true!  When doctors at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio tracked the weight of 1,550 men and women, they found that 57% of those who drank two or more cans of diet soda a day had become overweight after 8 years, compared with 47% of those who sipped on regular drinks.

Researchers say people who choose diet soda may feel that they’re already saving enough calories, so they don’t have to watch what they eat.

Earlier research found that people who were served an artificially sweetened soda ate more pizza at a meal than those who had a regular beverage.  How often have you seen someone obese eating two hamburgers, a large size fries sipping on a “diet” drink?  Ironic, but sadly true.

There are still plenty of questions that researchers need to answer.  For instance, are these results associated with all artificial sweeteners? Or just certain ones? And of course, it’s all just a theory until larger controlled studies can be done, but the early findings are fascinating.

In the meantime, there are alternatives for people who are trying to lose weight.  ”Drink what your mostly made of: water,” says Dr. Don VerHulst, It Works! For example, cut up fresh lemon, strawberries or even cucumber for a cool refreshing taste.
